We’ve Filed Our Union Application!

In one week, Yowza workers will have the opportunity to vote YES to form a union and secure a stronger voice in the workplace.

Together, we’ve taken a major step forward by filing our certification application with the Ontario Labour Relations Board (OLRB) to officially form a union. This is a critical moment in ensuring our ability to negotiate for better working conditions, protect ourselves from unfair practices, and have a say in the future of Yowza.

Together We Can Improve Yowza

Forming a union at work means leveraging the solidarity of our co-workers to collectively negotiate with our employer for improvements. By coming together, we have a seat at the table to advocate for better working conditions, fair wages, and benefits. We have already heard from many of our co-workers about what our priorities should be in these negotiations.

Here are some of our priorities:

Job Security and Protections from Sudden Layoffs
Sudden layoffs have taken a toll on the industry, with shows being slow to get greenlit. We want to ensure that when work picks up, we can return to our jobs and that our time at Yowza is valued.

Protection from Generative A.I. and Outsourcing
We want jobs to remain with Yowza workers as much as possible. As outsourcing becomes more commonplace and companies move towards generative A.I., we want a say in how these changes will impact our careers.

Fair Wages and Wage Minimums
Living in the GTA can be costly, and we want to make a living from doing the job we love. We love creating cartoons, but annual wage increases can help ensure long-lasting careers.

Health and Retirement Benefits
No one should have to give up what they love to do because they are physically or mentally unable to continue. A union provides security for the future through extensive health benefits and retirement plans. Union members can maintain these benefits even when they are not working at Yowza.

Representation When Things Go Wrong
When we have a problem, we won’t need to face it alone. We will have IATSE representation with us every step of the way. IATSE is home to 180,000 entertainment and cultural workers across North America and has decades of experience representing animation workers.
